I was raised in King City, and am the third of four children born to Bruce and Heather Rumble, with two older sisters, Robin and Stacey and a younger brother, Russell. All of us are athletic in our own ways. We were provided with every opportunity and encouraged to be competitive at whatever sparked our interest.
I attended Public School at Eva L Dennis and graduated from King City Secondary School in 2000. During my school years I played a wide variety of sports, within the junior and secondary school systems. I also played a lot of competitive sports in King City and numerous communities in the GTA.
During my younger years I played soccer, baseball, and hockey and started to referee hockey at the age of twelve, all within local organizations. While in high school, I played basketball, badminton, volleyball, slo-pitch, ultimate Frisbee and competed in track and field, just to mention a few. I was M.V.P. in all of these sports, Jr. Athlete of the year 1996, nominated to the Basketball Wall of Fame, Senior Athlete of the Year 1999 and was also a York Region Champion for javelin and twice for badminton. My passion for sports was not limited to one or two sports; I was always up for the challenge.
King City Secondary School had a boys hockey team, but I didn’t meet the requirements to play and therefore, I was determined to initiate the first ever girls hockey team along with the assistance from Mrs. Chvalevich, Mrs. Duncan and Miss Ramer. We were successful in organizing the first girl’s hockey team and in our first year we competed in a tournament at York University, and took second place in our division. I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to numerous teachers at KCSS who encouraged, supported and assisted me along my path of development during those years.
I played competitive hockey for Stouffville, North York and other communities, at the same time honing my referee skills as an O.M.H.A. and O.W.H.A, carded referee. Also, I played competitive fastball, mostly with the Aurora Diggers, attending national tournaments all across Canada, we won many national tournaments. Summers were devoted to fastball and winters to hockey and refereeing.
As a young girl I had envisioned playing women’s hockey at a higher level and either playing for Team Canada at the Olympics, or attending as an on-ice official. My quest to attend the Olympics came true at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, when I represented Canada as an International Ice Hockey Federation (I.I.H.F.) referee. What a tremendous honour and experience to represent Canada, Ontario and of course, my home town of King City. I have also travelled across Canada and to China, Shanghai and Switzerland in the past years as an official for the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA). I attribute my success to the support and encouragement from friends and family. I am thankful for the opportunities that were provided and the guidance which was given by Laurie Taylor-Bolton and Jacqui Palm. I am very proud and honoured to have been inducted into the Case of Distinction along with my fellow inductees.
To the students present and future at KCSS, strive for high goals, have a passion for what you want and you will be amazed at what you can achieve!
