Kyle was born in Kitchener, Ontario in 1985. From Kitchener, Kyle and his family relocated to Shelburne, Ontario where Kyle started in minor hockey. After 5 years in Shelburne he was on the move to Orangeville, Ontario. The next stop was Kleinburg, Ontario at the start of grade 11 when he enrolled at King City High. At this time, Kyle made the jump to junior hockey with the Mississauga Chargers of the OHA. During his season with the Chargers, Kyle represented Canada in the World Under 17 Hockey Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Kyle had a very successful minor hockey career. Kyle was drafted 47th overall in 2001 by the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. In 2002 Kyle joined the Mississauga IceDogs where he had two very successful seasons. By 2003-2004 he was an OHL Eastern Conference All Star and was chosen 132nd overall by Detroit Red Wings in the NHL draft. Kyle was returned to junior and the following year, 2004-2005, was chosen to play on Team OHL in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge Series. Again that year he was an OHL All Star as well as being selected the conference’s Best Defensive Defenseman. To cap off this very successful season Kyle was a part of Team Canada when they won Gold at the World Junior Hockey Championships in North Dakota.
His early professional career took the usual path that involved stints in the AHL with Grand Rapids. By 2007 Kyle was now ready to make the jump full time to elite status in his chosen profession and he won a Stanley Cup ring with the Red Wings in 2008. After three seasons in Detroit he was claimed off waivers by the L.A. Kings and led the team’s defencemen in scoring and was traded in 2009 to the Colorado Avalanche. Finally, in 2012 Kyle returned to his original team in Detroit. Following his return to Detroit in 2012, Kyle was selected to represent Canada in the World Hockey Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Kyle continues to fulfill his childhood dream, playing hockey in the NHL.
