Making life better through medical drugs.

David J. Edwards, Pharm.D., F.C.C.P., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice as well as Professor of Pediatrics at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Edwards graduated from King City Secondary School. While at King, David was very active in a variety of sports including track and field, football and, in rugby, he was a member of King City Secondary School’s Midget OFSAA championship team in 1969-70. He is still fondly remembered by many of his former teachers as the prototypical, well-rounded student/athlete. After graduating from King, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at the University of Toronto in 1978 and the Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1981 where he also undertook post-doctoral fellowship training in the Department of Pharmaceutics.

In 1983, Dr. Edwards joined the faculty at Wayne State University. His research has focused on the effect of food, beverages, herbal products and other drugs on drug metabolism and disposition. He has completed a number of studies investigating the mechanism and significance of the interaction between grapefruit juice and prescription medication. His laboratory was the first to isolate and identify the furanocoumarin compound 6’7’ -dihydroxybergamottin as a potential cause of this interaction. In addition, he holds a United States patent related to the use of natural compounds in grapefruit juice to improve the absorption of drugs by blocking metabolism in the cells of the intestinal wall. Dr. Edwards has published more than 70 research papers in pharmacy, clinical pharmacology and medical journals and is the co-author of the textbook Evaluating Drug Literature: A Statistical Approach. He was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy in 1992 and serves on the editorial board of the journal Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. An example of the esteem in which David is held is the fact that he has been voted Instructor of the Year 10 times by pharmacy students at Wayne State University.

Dr. Edwards lives in LaSalle, Ontario with his wife Christine (herself a graduate of KCSS, 1974) and their 3 children Jeff, Mike and Tim 13. In his spare time he is active in coaching minor hockey and little league baseball.
